Last week, we discussed why having an eCitizen account is essential and how it can simplify your interactions with government services. In today’s post, we’ll guide you through the step-by-step process of creating your eCitizen account and logging in, whether you’re a citizen, resident, refugee, diplomat, foreigner, or company representative.
How to Create an eCitizen Account
- Visit the eCitizen Portal
- Open your web browser and go to the official eCitizen website (i.e ., ecitizen.go.ke).
- Register for an Account:
- Click on the “Register” or “Sign Up” button.
- Select the type of account you want to register. i.e Citizen, Resident, Refugee, Diplomat or Foreigner
- Enter the required personal details, including your name, email address, phone number, and identification details.
- Verify Your Identity:
- You will receive a One-Time Password (OTP) on your phone or email. Enter this OTP to verify your account.
- Create a Password:
- Choose a strong password to secure your account (Use a password with an Uppercase, lowercase, a Number and a special Character)
- Upload a passport sized photo (preferably transparent or white background)
- One of the major update in ecitizen is the ability to upload a passport sized photo- this is used as your profile photo and adds a touch of personaliztion to the account.
- Submit Your Information:
- Review your details and submit the registration form. You may receive a confirmation email or SMS with further instructions.
Logging In to Your eCitizen Account
Logging in eCitizen For Citizens and Residents:
- Go to the eCitizen login page.
- Enter your registered email address or id and your password and click sign in.
- An eCitizen OTP will be sent to your selected method (email or text message)
- Click “Login.”
Logging in eCitizen For Refugees:
- Follow the same login process as citizens and residents. Refugees may need specific identification or registration details based on their status.
Logging in eCitizen For Diplomats and Foreigners
- Select the appropriate login option for diplomats or foreigners.
- Enter your specific credentials as provided during your registration process.
Logging in Ecitizen For Companies:
- Go to the eCitizen Login Page
- On the Login form, enter ID number of one of the company directors and password.
- Input the eCitizen OTP on the respective pag, then click login.
- Once logged in, you can toggle individual account or compny profile by clicking on the menu above the ecitizen dashboard.
- Alternatively, you can select “Your Company name” on the eCitzen Oauth Page available when you select any department.
How to Reset Your eCitizen Password
- Go to the eCitizen Login Page:
- Visit the eCitizen login page.
- Click on “Forgot Password”:
- Below the login fields, you will see a link that says “Forgot Password” or similar. Click on this link.
- Enter Your Registered Email or Phone Number:
- Provide the email address or phone number associated with your eCitizen account.
- Receive and Enter the OTP:
- You will receive a One-Time Password (OTP) on your registered email or phone. Enter this OTP on the password reset page.
- Create a New Password:
- Once the OTP is verified, you will be prompted to create a new password. Choose a strong and secure password.
- Submit and Confirm:
- Submit the new password. You may receive a confirmation email or SMS that your password has been successfully reset.

- An OTP (One-Time Password) is a temporary code sent to your registered phone or email. It is used to verify your identity and ensure secure access to your account.

- OTPs enhance the security of your eCitizen account, protecting it from unauthorized access and fraud.

- eCitizen uses your information to provide access to government services, verify your identity, and process transactions efficiently.

- According to eCitizen’s terms and conditions, they may access and use the data collected during your registration for government purposes, including verification and service provision.
Importance of a Phone Number and OTP Management
Why a Phone is Required
- A phone number is necessary for receiving OTPs, which are essential for account security and transaction verification.
Changing Your eCitizen OTP
- To update your phone number or change your OTP settings, log in to your eCitizen account.
- Navigate to the “Account Settings” or “Profile” section.
- Update your phone number and request a new OTP for verification.
What to Do If You Lose Your Contact Information
If You Lose Access to Your Email or Phone:
- If you no longer have access to your registered email or phone, you will need to update your contact details to regain access to your account.
How to Get Help when you lose your eCitizen contact information:
- Email Support:
- Send an email to [email protected] requesting a change of contact details.
- Visit Nyayo House:
- Visit Nyayo House to request a change of contact information in person.
- Quick Change via Payment:
- Pay Ksh 500 to Till Number 4201156. Forward the transaction message, along with both sides of your ID card and new contact details, to WhatsApp number 0707637143. This method allows you to effect the change in less than 10 minutes.
