Steps to Take Before Applying for a Duplicate Logbook
Step 1: Report the Loss to the Police
First, visit the nearest police station to report the loss. This is crucial as you’ll need a police abstract when applying for your duplicate logbook, just like with other important documents.
Step 2: Obtain an Affidavit from a Commissioner of Oaths
Next, you’ll need an affidavit. You can get this with the help of a lawyer or advocate. The affidavit serves as a legal statement confirming that your original logbook is lost.
Step 3: Get a Tape Lift
A tape lift is necessary to verify your vehicle’s chassis number. This involves the DCI using cello tape to lift the number from the chassis and placing it on an official tapelift document.
