The Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) introduced a new WhatsApp-based platform to simplify tax filing, allowing taxpayers to submit their returns in just three steps—down from the previous eight.
This guide walks you through the entire process, from starting a chat to submitting your return and settling any dues.

Before You Start: The Official KRA WhatsApp Number
Make sure you are using the official KRA WhatsApp number to avoid scams:

How to File Your Tax Return via WhatsApp – Step by Step
Follow these simple steps to complete your filing directly on WhatsApp:
Step 1: Start a Chat
Open WhatsApp and send a message to the official KRA number (+254 711 099 999). You can simply say “Hello” or “Tax Return” to initiate the conversation.
Step 2: Select the Service
Follow the automated prompts and choose the type of tax return you want to file (e.g., individual income, employment income, etc.).
Step 3: Verify Your Identity
Enter your KRA PIN when requested and complete the verification process as guided by the system.
Step 4: Review Your Details
The platform will automatically retrieve your filing history and display your tax information, including any pending obligations (thanks to KRA’s new prefilled returns feature).
Step 5: Confirm or Update Information
Check all the details provided carefully. Make any necessary corrections and proceed to the next step.
Step 6: Submit Your Return
Follow the final prompts to complete and officially submit your tax return.
Step 7: Settle Any Dues (If Applicable)
If there are outstanding payments, the WhatsApp platform will guide you on how to clear them.
Key Benefit: The system offers real-time support, so you can receive instant assistance if you get stuck while filing.
Important: Prefilled Returns & Deadline
KRA has also introduced prefilled returns for individuals with employment income. This means data from employer PAYE submissions (gross pay, taxable income, SHIF, Affordable Housing Levy) is automatically filled in for you. Taxpayers with other income sources will also see basic details and withholding taxes prefilled.
Deadline Reminder:
The deadline for payment of any outstanding tax on income earned in 2025 is April 30, 2026. File early to avoid last-minute issues.
