In this post, we’ll walk you through the different ways to verify driving license.
To verify the status or validity of a driving license in Kenya using the National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) services, you can use one of the following methods: SMS, the NTSA mobile app or the eCitizen portal.
Below are step-by-step instructions for each method.

Method 1: Verify Driving License via SMS
This is a quick and convenient way to check your driving license status using your mobile phone.
- Open your messaging app: Launch the SMS app on your mobile phone.
- Compose a new message:
- In the recipient field, enter the NTSA SMS shortcode: 22846.
- In the message body, type DL followed by a space and your National ID number (not the driving license number). For example: DL 1234567890.
- Send the message: Ensure you have sufficient airtime (the service costs approximately KSh 10 per SMS).
- Receive confirmation: You will receive an SMS from NTSA indicating whether your driving license is valid, expired, suspended, or invalid. If invalid, you may need to visit an NTSA office with relevant documents for assistance.
Note: If you don’t receive a response or encounter issues, contact NTSA support at 0709 932 000, 020 6632 000.
Method 2: Verify Driving License via NTSA Mobile App
The NTSA mobile app provides a digital platform to check your driving license status.
- Download the NTSA app:
- Visit the Google Play Store (for Android) or App Store (for iOS).
- Search for the official NTSA Self Service App and install it.
- Log in :
- Open the app and log in using your eCitizen credentials. If you don’t have an account, register by providing your National ID number and personal details.
- Access the verification tab:
- Navigate to the Driving License Verification section in the app.
- Enter your National ID number.
- Verify:
- Click the Verify button.
- The app will display whether your license is valid or invalid. If invalid, contact NTSA or visit the nearest NTSA office with your driving license application documents.
Method 3: Verify Driving License via eCitizen Portal
The eCitizen portal is an online platform for accessing government services, including NTSA driving license verification.
- Visit the eCitizen portal:
- Open a web browser and go to https://accounts.ecitizen.go.ke.
- Log in:
- Sign in using your eCitizen account credentials (email/phone number and password). If you don’t have an account, create one by registering with your National ID and personal details.
- Access NTSA services:
- On the dashboard, scroll down and click on the National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) tab or icon.
- Check license status:
- Your driving license’s expiry date, status and other information will be displayed on the NTSA dashboard.
- Renew or note down the details:
- The portal will display details such as your license’s validity, driving classes, full name, and expiry date if the license is valid. If no details appear or the status is invalid, the license may be fake or archived, and you should visit an NTSA office for clarification.
Note: If your license is shown as “archived,” it may be under verification for validity or penalties. Contact NTSA or submit a request via email with copies of your National ID and driving license.
